Troubleshooting

BillyGate game play - playing OTB chess on supported eboards, against opponents on online chess sites like chess.com or lichess.org, using supported client apps like Chessnut or Chessconnect - is usually very straightforward and reliable. When problems occur they are usually related to the eboard, online chess site or client app. So a good first step in troubleshooting is to see whether your problem goes away on another supported eboard, online chess site or client app.

SYMPTOM: missing robotic move or LED move highlights.

If one or more pieces have been disturbed and are off-centre this can interfere with BillyGate's internal game model and cause it to not recognise opponent (or player) moves. BillyGate uses eboard LEDs to highlight out-of-position pawns or pieces for this reason, but this problem is more common on the Square Off Neo - which has dim LEDs, is prone to disturbing adjacent pieces during robotic moves and has over-sensitive square occupancy sensors (making it over-react to off-centre pieces).

FIX: look for off-centre pieces and centre them (sometimes lifting and replacing them helps).

Chess site

Chessnut and Lichess account emails must match

Lichess Chessnut app

SYMPTOM: you can use the Chessnut app on chess.com but not on lichess.org.

For some reason, related to the Chessnut app's authentication to the Lichess chess site, it appears that to use the Chessnut app with Lichess (and BillyGate) you need to:

Create a Chessnut account and use it sign into the Chessnut app. This Chessnut account must have the same email address as that associated with the Lichess account you wish to use.
If you see messages in the Chessnut app saying things like "token expired", or Lichess stops working in the Chessnut app, sign out and back in again (to the Chessnut app account).

FIX: Create/sign into a email-matching Chessnut account

Chessconnect not working when player has black pieces

SYMPTOM: Chessconnect app does not register moves when player has black pieces.

FIX: If BillyGate is using its Chessnut Move emulation (for robotic eboards) then you must disable the Chessconnect app setting that automatically places the black pieces on ranks 1 and 2.
